No. PuttrLab Pro is a one-time, non-consumable in-app purchase of $19.99. Pay once and you have Pro forever on any device signed in to your Apple ID. You can restore the purchase from the app's settings on a new device.

Yes. Sessions you complete in the free version are saved on your device — you just can't see them in the View Data screen until you upgrade. As soon as you unlock PuttrLab Pro, any prior sessions will be visible in your history and trends right away, no need to start over.

PuttrLab requires iPhone 12 or later running iOS 17 or higher. The app uses the rear camera system for tracking, so a device with a capable camera is required.

Yes. PuttrLab works with both blade and mallet putters. The tracking marker attaches to the flat top surface of the putter head. As long as the marker can sit flat and stay secure, it will work.

Absolutely. PuttrLab works on any surface where you can putt — putting greens, indoor putting mats, even carpet. Just make sure you have adequate lighting so the camera can clearly see the marker.

PuttrLab uses fiducial marker technology, which is designed for precise position and rotation tracking. For putts at 15 feet and under, the accuracy is excellent for measuring face angle, tempo, and stroke dynamics. Results are most accurate when the marker is rigid, flat, and well-lit.

The tracking system relies on high contrast between the black pattern and the white border/background. Off-white, cream, or textured paper reduces this contrast and can cause tracking errors or marker detection failure. Pure white cardstock provides the best results.

The marker is extremely lightweight — a small piece of cardstock and tape. It should not noticeably affect the weight or balance of your putter.

Check the following:

  • Make sure the entire marker (including the white border) is visible in the camera frame.
  • Ensure adequate lighting — avoid heavy shadows on the marker.
  • Make sure the marker is flat against the putter head and not warped or bent.
  • Clean the marker if it has dirt or smudges.
  • Check that your phone camera lens is clean.
  • Ensure the printing quality of the marker is high quality. The black coloring on the marker must not be faded, smudged, misaligned, etc.

Traditional putting sensors attach to your putter grip and use internal accelerometers to measure stroke data. They're good products, but they typically cost $150–$300+ and add weight/bulk to your club. PuttrLab uses computer vision through your iPhone camera instead, which means no sensor to charge and no added weight on your club. It's free to start, and the full Pro feature set unlocks for a one-time $19.99 — far less than any dedicated putting sensor. PuttrLab focuses specifically on the putting metrics that matter most for shorter-range putts.

Any adjustable phone tripod that holds an iPhone in landscape orientation and can angle the camera downward will work. Most options on Amazon in the $15–$20 range are fine. See our recommended tripods on the Getting Started page.
